For over thirty years, one restaurant in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood has served generations of Wayne State University staff, students, theater attendees, and lovers of food and drink with a kick. That destination is the legendary Union Street restaurant. Originally owned by Mr. John Lopez of Agave and Atlas Global Bistro fame, it is now owned by Ginger and George Zauner, whom have over decades of uniquely Detroit hospitality service expertise developed an understanding of what it takes to create a successful restaurant in Detroit.

Lopez and Ginger Zauner first began their friendship and now business relationship while she worked at neighboring restaurant, The Majestic Café. After earning her stripes there under the tutelage of the legendary Zaniea family, the opportunity of a lifetime was presented to the Zauner’s. In 2014 as John began to explore other culinary adventures, he decided it was time sell the institution that is Union Street, but only to another owner, who would maintain the legacy of this Detroit gem.

Since their purchase of Union Street, the Zauner’s have successfully maintained and elevated the restaurants presence in the district with a focus on locally sourced foods and fast friendly service all while striking the perfect balance with their menu. In late 2015, Lopez was brought back on board and among his duties provides culinary insight and creative direction. The result is a menu both features seasonal dining offerings and the classics Union Street is known for such as their Dragon Eggs.

Union Street is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch, dinner and late night service. On Sunday’s they extend service to include brunch which features one of the area’s top DJ’s , DJ Shortround spinning the latest in House, Electronic, Soul and Jazz music. From Noon to 4 p.m. they offer bottomless Mimosa’s, one of the largest Bloody Mary bars in the neighborhood and classic dishes with a twist such as Southern Praline Pancakes.  Home to one of the largest spaces in the area, they also offering a private dining room perfect for special events and provides catering services to off-site clients.

Union Street is located at 4145 Woodward Avenue, Detroit MI, 48201, between Willis and Alexandrine. Parking is available currently in a shard lot with PNC Bank, in the Woodward Gardens Parking Structure and along Alexandrine Street. For reservations or to inquire about catering, please call 313.831.2553 or visit www.unionstreetdetroit.com.
